How to Plan a Baptism in Melbourne: A Gentle Guide for Families

Planning a baptism is a joyful thing, but for most families it is also the first time they have organised one. There is a church to book, godparents to ask, an outfit to choose and a gathering to plan, often while caring for a very small baby.

Every parish does things a little differently, so treat this as a gentle order of events rather than a rulebook. Your church will guide you on anything specific to them.

First: speak to your church

Start here, because everything else follows the date. Ask your parish how far ahead they book, which dates they have available, whether they ask parents to attend a preparation meeting, and what they need from you beforehand.

Popular dates can go early, so it is worth asking sooner rather than later, especially if family are travelling to be there.

Next: choose godparents

Your church will let you know how many godparents they ask for and any requirements they have.

Whoever you choose, ask them early. Godparents often need to arrange time off or travel, and giving them notice means they can be there on the day.

Two to three months before: order the gown

If you are choosing a made to order piece, this is the moment. Our standard production time is approximately 6-8 weeks, so ordering at this point leaves room for production, delivery and any final preparations.

Melbourne families are also welcome to book a private viewing at our home studio in Hallam to see the collection in person before deciding.

Six to eight weeks before: plan the gathering

Baptism celebrations are usually held straight after the ceremony, so choose somewhere close to the church. A restaurant, a function room or a family home all work beautifully.

Send invitations around this time, and keep the guest list to the people who matter most. Babies do better with a shorter, calmer day.

One month before: the finishing touches

Confirm the details with your church and your venue. Arrange a photographer if you would like one, and think about the small things that make the day feel complete: a candle, a keepsake. 

When your gown arrives, unpack it and try it on your baby straight away. It is much easier to sort out a fit question weeks ahead than the night before.

The week of: keep it simple

Steam or press the gown gently and hang it ready. Pack a spare outfit for afterwards, a bottle or feed, and something to keep your little one comfortable between the ceremony and the celebration.

Then let the day be what it is. It passes quickly, and what families remember is not the timing of the schedule but the feeling of everyone gathered together.
